Meet Our 2024 Head Girl Isabella

We are thrilled to introduce Isabella Morrison as our Head Girl for the upcoming year. With her passion and leadership qualities, Isabella is set to guide our students on a strong path in 2024.

What do you hope to bring to the College community in your role as Head Girl in 2024?

As Santa Maria College’s Head Girl for 2024, I hope to foster a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and respected. I believe the student voice is the most important of the College, where every person should be able to express their ideas, concerns, or opinions. Over the past six years, developing new friendships with students from other year groups has proven to be incredibly beneficial. I hope that by giving students more chances to interact with one another, we can further remove any barriers that may still exist between year groups.

Alongside the 2024 Student Leadership Council, we will prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of students, where we continue to develop a safe, open, and inclusive school culture where students feel they have a safe space to talk with someone. Students should not be scared or embarrassed to ask for help from teachers or their peers when they are struggling, which is why I am focused on building a large support network around all girls, so the students can stay mentally healthy and happy.

Each Santa Maria Student has their own set of special and personalised talents and qualities. I would like to embrace these qualities and promote them to all students in order to encourage everyone to follow their passions. It is extremely important for us to embrace our differences. In 2024, I would also like to celebrate a more diverse school culture where people feel they can express, celebrate and educate others about their own culture.

I aspire to be an approachable leader, and I can’t wait to get to know all the students better throughout the next year. I hope to encourage students to strive for their personal best, whether it be through academics or sports. I will be there to support you. I feel extremely honoured to be Santa Maria’s Head Girl for 2024, and I promise to try my best in every aspect of College life!

Why did you apply for a leadership position?

I applied for the role of Head Girl with the hopes of being a positive role model for all students and making all Santa Maria students feel their ideas, concerns, and opinions are expressed and valued. Since joining the College in Year 5, Santa Maria has provided me with various amazing opportunities, and when applying for this leadership position, I simply hope to give back to the College. From holding leadership positions in the past, I have found a love for working in a team and being able to hear everyone’s opinions. Being able to lead an amazing group of girls in the Santa Maria student body has something I have always aspired to do. In applying for this position, I aim to create real and lasting change. Most importantly, I want to represent the students. Each Santa Maria student is so unique in their own way, and I can’t wait to hear everyone’s ideas and opinions, so we can create positive change for the Santa Maria community.

Isabella being congratulated after being announced as 2024 Head Girl

Who do you admire, and what is it that you admire about them the most?

Someone I admire in my life is my Nanna due to her unmatched perseverance and optimism. She has experienced many hardships throughout her life, from living through a depression, a World War and suffering significant health challenges, yet she still brings a positive and optimistic outlook into everyday life. This optimism has transferred onto me, and that’s why you will always see me smiling or having a laugh. My positive outlook on life has been fostered by my Nanna’s support and guidance, which makes me admire her!

If you could sit down and have a conversation with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

If I could have a conversation with anyone, dead or alive, I would speak with Ellyse Perry. From a young age, I have always looked up to Ellyse as she has been a role model for me through her talent on the cricket pitch and her leadership off the field. Ellyse Perry is a highly accomplished cricketer and former soccer player whose dedication and skill have seen her excel in traditionally male-dominated sports. She is an inspirational icon of Australia who embraces her own identity and her own differences. Her success challenges gender stereotypes and demonstrates that women can compete and succeed in any field they choose, regardless of societal expectations. I aspire to take this encouragement and support with me into my leadership for 2024, where I will be there to encourage all Santa Maria students to strive for their best effort and follow their passions. Perry has had a greater influence beyond her sporting career. She has also been a strong advocate for gender equality and speaking out about the need for better opportunities for female athletes. Ellyse speaks out when she believes something is wrong, and as Santa Maria’s Head Girl, I would like to promote this philosophy to the student body.

The Value of Student Voice – Jennifer Oaten

“At Santa Maria College, we are not only given the opportunity, but we are encouraged by our teachers and each other to voice our opinions, concerns and ideas—to continue moving forward as a school and as a community. Student voice is integral for growth, and allows for us, as students to have an active role in shaping our education.”
