Sophia and Abigail Second in the Nation

Abigail and Sophia with some of their robots

Earlier this month Sophia (Year 10) and Abigail (Year 9) Marra entered the National Robocup Competition following their State win in the Experienced Onstage Performance Division at Curtin University earlier this year.

The girls had to design, build and program EV3 robots to do a performance with a theme to music. Their performance was called ‘Mice at Work’ with a Disney characters theme. Due to border restrictions, the students were unable to travel to the national competition so competed virtually.

The girls entered via a pre-recorded performance and performed live via Teams, where they got to see the other contestants at the Queensland Hub. Once again, the girls produced an exceptional performance and came second overall.

Sophia said, “We started building and planning our entry back in December but did most of the build during the Term 1 holidays, spending about 30 hours a week on it. Then during the Term 2 holidays, most of the programming was completed.”

Abigail told us, “I really enjoy the creativity of coming up with our own theme and characters and presenting it in a way that is innovative.”

Sophia has been competing in the competition since she was in Year 4. “I enjoy the legacy of the competition and that it encourages people to get into the STEM industry or engineering, especially as the numbers of male and female participants were more equal this year.”

Congratulations Girls!
