Years 7 – 11 Awards Evening: Celebrating Student Excellence

At our recent annual awards ceremony, we celebrated the exceptional dedication and accomplishments of our students from Years 7 – 11. It was a night filled with recognition for their hard work and commitment to their subjects, House, and the College, witnessed by their families, teachers, and peers.
Principal Jennifer Oaten addressed the audience, emphasising the significance of embracing our individuality. She highlighted the richness of our diverse personalities, faiths, cultures, abilities, talents, values, and dreams, underscoring that each of us is special and unique in our own right. Jennifer explored how our life experiences, upbringing, childhood lessons, and nurturing from family and school shape who we are as individuals.
“Embrace your differences; it is what distinguishes you. Our imperfections are to be embraced,” she urged, echoing the wisdom of Maya Angelou: “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.”

In her speech, Head Girl 2024, Isabella Morrison emphasised the importance of celebrating all students at Santa Maria. While the evening honoured top achievers, Isabella stressed that every student, present or not, should take pride in their dedication, commitment, and effort within the College.
“Success is not solely about achieving the highest marks. It is also about improving by a few percent, surpassing personal bests in sports, or supporting peers in reaching their potential,” she affirmed. Isabella acknowledged the reluctance to discuss unsuccessful attempts in a society that glorifies achievements, asserting that these moments of failure are stepping stones towards excellence, not its antithesis.
