Students and Staff Training as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
Religious Education at Santa Maria College is not confined to Religious Education classes or liturgical occasions. Christ is at the centre of all our endeavours. As a learning community joined together in faith, we aim to bear witness to Christ’s vision and values in all aspects of school life.
A number of Year 12 students and staff share their faith as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at our liturgical celebrations. Next Year, 41 Year 12 students and two staff members will be commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at our College Opening Mass. They have undertaken the three-hour training program earlier this week to prepare for their ministry. We are delighted that they have elected to take up this role and we look forward to their ministry at Friday and whole College Masses celebrated during 2020.
We asked some of the Year 12 girls, why they have chosen to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
“I have chosen to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to further deepen my relationship that I share with God. I want to engage with God in a new way rather than through prayer, but to be given the opportunity to distribute Jesus’ body and blood, which is a privilege. Through my ministry I want to be able to give back to my school community and to serve others through the Eucharist”. Abbey Richardson
“I have chosen to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion because I want the chance to give back and contribute at special College Masses and boarders’ Mass on Sundays. Becoming an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist will allow me to further develop my own personal growth and spiritual development. This ministry means I can serve in a special way at Mass and lead by example. Zoe Pedrin
“I applied to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion because faith and service have great importance in my life. This opportunity is highly special for me to be able to express my passion for serving others by assisting the school community, as well as enriching my own connection to my faith. This ministry is greatly significant because it is a way in which we can administer Jesus’ blessings and gifts through the Eucharist and allow for others to be involved in and reflect.” Alexia Jurkowski
Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten
It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
