WorkWise Program
Last year’s Year 10 students were invited to participate in an exciting new initiative during the holidays.
Students were encouraged to seek out a work placement they were interested in attending in the December/January holiday period. The length of the placement could be from three to ten days. Students were required to complete Occupational Health & Safety requirements before attending their placements. The girls were also required to organise a Santa Maria staff member to visit them whilst at their placement.
Felicity Dixon was one student who took up the opportunity. Felicity spent her time at Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre, in January.
During her time there, Felicity fed the animals and birds, cleaned out cages, and generally helped out. Staff member, Melissa Marshall was her supervisor and mentored her whilst she was there.
Felicity says, “I enjoyed interacting with the residents, and education birds, learning about dingoes, and learning in the clinic. Although I did find working outdoors in the heat, the physical labour, and some of the repetitive tasks challenging. The experience helped my love of animals and I learnt how complex the needs of wildlife are, compared with domestic cats and dogs.”
This year’s Year 11 students can contact Careers Coordinator, Maryanne Hughes in the Careers Centre if they would like details about a placement during the April, July, or September holidays.
Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten
It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.

Santa Maria Teams Shine in Term 1 Sports
Santa Maria had a huge number of girls in the IGSSA AFL and Volleyball competition with strong results for a number of teams.
