Mission Blog: Be A Good Samaritan
Live for others
In Pope Francis’ latest letter to the people, Fratelli Tutt, On Fraternity and Social Friendship, Pope Francis invites us to dream “as a single human family, as fellow travellers, sharing the same flesh and the same earth, our common home.” In essence, we are all brothers and sisters of the one human race. As people of faith, who live in a wounded world, we are called to be protagonists and architects of universal brotherhood.
What does this mean?
Since we are all brothers and sisters of one human family, we must act with clarity, courage, and determination to seek the good of everyone in ways that are inclusive and transcend all boundaries. It means we must be open to the understanding that everyone has the same inherent God-given dignity. Thus, our response to others, particularly those who are wounded and downtrodden, should display attitudes and actions of welcome and solidarity with the suffering. In essence, we are to be people who live for others just like the Good Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke (10:25-37). When we are Good Samaritans, we mirror God’s dream of unity and universal brotherhood for all His children.
So how do we do this?
In the video above, our Service Captain Abby Young explains how you can help those less fortunate this Christmas by giving generously to the College’s annual Christmas Appeal, launched this week. The three agencies we are supporting this year are:
- St Patrick’s Care
- St Vincent de Paul
- The Shopfront
Here is a list of items these agencies have requested to make sure the neediest in our community have something this Christmas.
An increasing number of West Australians will go without the bare essentials this Christmas, let alone the luxuries we are accustomed to.
We can stand in solidarity with many families showing that we recognise our common humanity by:
- Being open to the needs of others
- Being concerned enough to want to make a difference
- Recognising that we all belong to one human family.
- Showing gratitude for all we have by helping others.
We have so much more than we really need, while many have little to nothing. Let us not be like those in the parable who pretended not to see the need of the beaten man by turning away. If we are to live our faith, we must be people who act with courage, and determination to mirror God’s plan of a united brotherhood of mankind.
Please give generously this year, everyone deserves to have a wonderful Christmas.
God Bless.2022
We all belong to one human family.
