The Big Chop: Marissa to Donate Hair to Charity

Here at Santa Maria College, we inspire our girls to act with courage and compassion to enrich our world.

Year 5 student Marissa is doing just that and more. Next month, she will donate her ponytail to Wigs for Kids, a charity that creates wigs for children who experience hair loss during cancer treatment.

We sat down with Marissa to learn more about her journey with Wigs for Kids.

Why did you choose to get involved with the charity, Wigs for Kids?

A whole bunch of kids are fighting cancer, and sometimes the treatment causes them to lose their hair. I can’t imagine how hard it is to be without hair, and I have plenty so I thought this was a way I could help some of these kids so that when they look in the mirror, they have hair and don’t look so unwell.

What does this cause mean to you?

My mother passed away from cancer, and one thing that really bothered her with her treatment was that she was scared of losing her hair. I don’t want these kids to have to worry about this.

Are you nervous about cutting your hair off?

No, not really because I know that my hair will grow back, and I will give one kid going through chemotherapy some hair.

How can our community support you?

They can help by donating a little amount to Kids with Cancer, Wigs for Kids, which will go a long way to helping these children as they deal with this horrible disease.

We’re incredibly proud of Marissa’s efforts and look forward to seeing the Santa Maria community get behind her and this fantastic cause.

The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
