A Journey of Self: Year 12 Retreat

Our deepest wishes are whispers of our authentic selves. We must learn to respect them. We must learn to listen.

The Year 12 Retreat gives students the space to embark on an interior journey of self. Students are encouraged to simply listen to their hearts and walk with God.

The Year 12s undertake a journey of deep inquiry into the truth of who they are at the very core of their being. They reflect on who they were, who they are now, and who they want to be.

A dedicated team of 22 staff led the girls through the three-day Retreat, held across three locations. Students were guided to share stories, regrets, fears, hopes and dreams for the future. Alongside this, the girls embarked on ‘The Quest’, a reflection of the ancient hero’s quest for the Holy Grail. They were challenged by several outdoor team activities to meet their true authentic self.

The Retreat was structured in the context of the Mass, drawn together, culminating in a celebration of the Eucharist.

The Retreat journey was travelled individually and collectively. It was carefully supported by their peers, the Retreat Leader and a small group of facilitators. As Retreat Coordinator, it was a privilege for me to see the process unfold and witness the openness of each student to give and receive the love of God from each other.

The following reflections represented the students’ thoughts and were shared during the Retreat Mass.

The past few days have been a special time to spend with our year group. Being removed from the hustle and bustle of Perth and the stress of Year 12 really allowed us to open up to each other and reflect on our journeys and the relationships we’ve developed over our time at Santa Maria. Through the inspirational guidance from our staff members, we were able to safely think about the journeys we want to embark on after our time at the College, but more importantly, the young women we want to be on our journeys. Elouise Parsons

The Year 12 Retreat allowed us to escape from the stresses and routine of daily life. We were able to spend time with friends, reflect, pray, and enjoy nature. The Retreat program enabled me to reflect on my academic, social, faith and personal journeys thus far in my life and to contemplate what the future will hold. I feel privileged to have been part of this excellent experience. Niamh Smithies

The Year 12 Retreat was such a meaningful and rewarding experience! It helped me reflect on my high school journey, faith, values, and future goals. My favourite part was listening to the staff stories as they really opened up to us and shared some valuable life lessons. Abby Young

My sincere appreciation is offered to the staff for their time and dedication to this experience.

Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten

It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
