Brainstem: Students Visit Harry Perkins Institute
Year 10 Brainstem students visited the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research this week. The girls were able to see first-hand, the work being done at the institute and spend time with research scientists.
Students had an eye-opening experience into the world of biomedical science and what a career in research could look like. Abbey Winship said, “We learnt about how DNA can be edited so as to diagnose and treat diseases and medical conditions such as cancers, muscular dystrophy and sickle celled anaemia. It was a great day to get out of the classroom and into a real research lab facility to see first-hand the work that is being conducted, and to learn the theory behind manipulating DNA.”
“I really enjoyed hearing from past Santa Maria student, Nicola Prinsipe (2014), about her pathway after school. I was motivated by the journey she took to find her way into medical research. I think something that really interested me about the excursion was being able to interact with the scientists and experience some of the practical elements they encounter as part of their career (eg CRISPR-ing cells). I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the research facility and it has definitely inspired me to consider scientific research and biotechnology as a possible career path!”, said Lauren Winship
Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten
It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
