Celebrating our Year 12 Mothers & Daughters

The clouds outside were emptying, but the hearts of our Year 12 mothers and daughters were full on Sunday morning as they shared one of the most memorable events on the College calendar, the Mother Daughter Breakfast.

Held at Fraser’s Restaurant in Kings Park, this event is a beautiful tradition where our Year 12 mothers and daughters come together for a morning of fun, connection, and gratitude.

This year, we were fortunate to have Professor Fiona Wood as the guest speaker. Her words were inspiring and left an impact on both mothers and daughters alike.

The Year 12 music students put together a special performance dedicated to all the mums, performing ‘Higher and Higher’.

Music Captain Lucy Dal Molin said, “For us, it’s a celebration and appreciation of the effort our incredible mums put into lifting us up and supporting us with their unconditional love.”

Below, some Year 12 students share their thoughts with us about the morning.

“The Mother Daughter Breakfast was an extremely successful event. It was a great bonding time with our mums, especially after the hectic few weeks we have all had at school. I particularly liked the guest speaker, Professor Fiona Wood. Her words were incredibly inspiring, and we were lucky to hear from her. I also enjoyed witnessing my mum read the letter I wrote for her. We can never express how truly grateful we are for our mothers but writing the letters was a good way of saying we are grateful. Overall, the Mother Daughter breakfast was a beautiful event (even with the bucketing rain!).” Siena Monck

“My mum and I really enjoyed the breakfast together. Even though the weather was dull, we had a great time. It was amazing listening to Professor Fiona Wood and taking away the wonderful lessons she had to share with all of us. It was also really nice to spend some quality time with my mum and give my letter to her, thanking her for everything amazing she does for me and for the rest of my family. It was a great morning!” Olivia Taliangis

Guest speaker, Professor Fiona Wood

“The Year 12 Mother Daughter Breakfast was a beautiful and lovely occasion. To be surrounded by a room full of strong, inspirational women, my peers, their mothers, our teachers, and the extraordinary guest speaker, Professor Fiona Wood. It was such a special experience. It’s so easy to get caught up in the business and stress of Year 12 that we forget to step back from our studies to spend quality time with our families. It was so refreshing to have this opportunity to socialise, laugh and bond with our friends and mothers. It was also amazing to express our gratitude, love, and appreciation to our mothers in the individual letters we wrote to them. It was heart-warming to see how much it meant to all the mums as they read them!” Karin Boulton

“My mum flew into the country for a week, simply for this event. Being a boarder, I don’t really get to see her much, so it was extra special that we were able to attend. Professor Fiona Wood was incredibly inspirational. I want to be a nurse and help save and change lives. Listening to her was so inspirational and has made me even more excited to go on to make a difference.” Sarah Currell

This indeed was a morning of making memories to stay with us forever.

Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten

It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
