Spreading Holiday Cheer with the Great Santa Bake Off

Once again, it’s that time of the year where students compete for the winning title of the Great Santa Bake Off. With the theme being Christmas, Year 9 Food students had to brainstorm what they would bake to best show off the baking skills they acquired over the term.

The students began the investigation stage, where they embarked on a culinary journey, learning and practising three distinct baking methods: creaming, one-bowl, and melt and mix. Simultaneously, they delved into the variations of icing, considering three diverse types: velvety buttercream, indulgent chocolate ganache, and elegant royal icing. In anticipation of the Bake Off, they expanded their horizons by delving into the realm of food photography concepts.

The Brief

Their task was clear: create a bake that not only met the technical standards but also looked delicious. But, here’s the twist.  Limited by the constraint of having just two lessons for both baking and decorating, each group was allowed a maximum of two edible decorating items to work their magic and had to pick their best two portions for judging. They faced the challenge of time; a mere 30 minute limit to decorate their pieces in a Christmas manner. They only had access to a modest selection of ingredients, including various types of flour, sugar, an array of flavour-enhancing elements, and decorative elements. Despite these limitations, their creativity knew no bounds.

See what the girl’s came up with below:

Aleisha and Sophie – Christmas Tree Cupcakes

Charli and Ava – Sponge Cake with Strawberries and Cream

Olivia and Mikaela – Small Christmas Cake

Ella and Lucy – Ralph’s Reindeers

Frankie, Layla and Aislinn – Rosemary Focaccia

Chloe and Mali – Snowman Cookies

Annabelle and Ashlee – Sugar Cookies

Grace and Ciara – Reindeer Chocolate Cupcakes

Hayden – Christmas Wreath Cookie Cake

The girls were paid a visit by their neighboring class and teachers, who cast their votes for their favorite pieces by dropping small slips of paper into individual cups.

Congratulations to Hayden (Christmas Wreath), Ella and Lucy (Ralph’s Reindeers) and Aleisha and Sophie (Christmas Tree Cupcakes). They all secured a well-deserved victory, sharing the first-place honours in the Great Santa Bake Off.  A big round of applause to all the girls for their creative creations!  Well done!

Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten

It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
