Students Find Ways to Reduce Coffee Waste

Australians consume 37 million kilograms of coffee a year. The industry is worth about $8 billion per year. That’s an awful lot of used wet coffee grinds to dispose of!

The Year 10 Home Economics classes have been developing their sustainability knowledge and skills. The girls have been exploring ways to reduce waste when working in the café industry.

Some options include using coffee grinds to:

  • create compost
  • scare off bugs in the garden
  • neutralise odours
  • scour pots and pans
  • create a natural dye
  • tenderise meat
  • grow mushrooms

The list goes on and on. Our girls opted for a natural beauty product.

Students really enjoyed creating their own scented coffee body scrub with coffee grounds collected in Term 1.

Megan Franzinelli and Alexandra Brown’s Year 10 classes are excited for the commencement of the Daily Grind Café service. The service operates during class time providing students with the opportunity to develop their barista skills from Term 2 through to Term 4.

Why not make your own scrub in the holidays? Here’s the recipe the girls used in class.
