Year 9 Artists Apart Together
One of the biggest challenges of COVID-19 was the way it broke down the sense of community and connection that humans need. At Santa Maria, that sense of community has always been very strong, so our staff and students were determined to ensure it was maintained, despite our physical distancing.
In many different areas of the College, innovative projects worked to keep us ‘apart together’. Year 9 Visual Arts students symbolically overcame the distance via a collaborative project titled Swoon.
When classes resumed after the restrictions, the girls were asked to bring a photo of themselves during isolation. They then created a life-sized drawing from the photograph. The drawings were made into an exhibition displayed around the College. The installation shows the girls finally… ‘apart together’.
The project was called Swoon in honour of Caledonia Curry. She is a Brooklyn-based street artist who uses Swoon as her moniker. While studying painting, she famously brought art to the public by pasting life-sized portraits to buildings.
Students are enjoying the installation and the insight it shares into how some of our Year 9s spent their corona days!
Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten
It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
